What AMSA Examiner is
Many AMSA certificates of competency finish with an oral examination, in which an AMSA examiner asks questions based on the knowledge and skills required for the certificate. AMSA Examiner is a study platform for candidates preparing for that examination. It is a place to study, practise and check readiness. It is not an examination body, it does not issue certificates, and it is not a source of AMSA’s official requirements.
Who operates AMSA Examiner
AMSA Examiner is operated by Navisailor Learning Centre, a maritime training organisation. Its website is navisailorlearning.com. Navisailor Learning Centre also runs AMSA oral exam coaching as a separate service, described below.
Who AMSA Examiner is designed for
AMSA Examiner is designed for people preparing for an AMSA oral examination, including:
- deck officers working through the STCW certificates, from Watchkeeper deck (OOW) up to Master (unlimited); and
- candidates for the domestic commercial vessel (near coastal) Master certificates.
What kinds of AMSA CoC preparation it supports
AMSA Examiner supports preparation across multiple deck officer and domestic commercial vessel certificate levels. It organises its study tools by rank, and we publish a preparation guide for each of these AMSA certificates:
International (STCW) certificates
- Master Unlimited – Master (unlimited) (STCW II/2)
- Chief Mate Unlimited – Chief Mate (unlimited) (STCW II/2)
- AMSA OOW (Watchkeeper Deck) – Watchkeeper deck (STCW II/1)
- Chief Mate <3000 GT – Chief Mate less than 3000 GT (STCW II/1 and II/2)
- Master <500 GT – Master less than 500 GT (STCW II/1 and II/2)
Domestic commercial vessel (near coastal) certificates
- Master <45 m Near Coastal – Master less than 45 metres near coastal
- Master <100 m Near Coastal – Master less than 100 metres near coastal

How the platform works
- Register and choose your rank. You create an account and choose the rank you are preparing for. A new account starts on free access.
- Use the study tools. Depending on your rank and enrolment, the platform provides learning topics, a Quiz Bank for practice questions, mind maps, a study plan built around your exam date, weak-area identification with a revision book, and exam readiness reports.
- Choose your level of access. Free access, full access and staged access are explained on the pricing and access page.
- Study on any device. AMSA Examiner runs in a web browser and can be installed on a phone or computer.
The content you see depends on the rank you enrol for and on what has been published for that rank. AMSA Examiner’s practice material is study material. It is not official AMSA examination content, and it cannot predict the questions you will be asked.
Independent of AMSA
AMSA Examiner is independently operated and is not operated or endorsed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. AMSA publishes the official syllabus and examiner checklist for each certificate, and sets the requirements, booking process and rules for its oral examinations. AMSA Examiner does not replace any of those and does not guarantee any examination result. Always confirm current requirements with AMSA, starting with AMSA’s Prepare for your oral exam page. See also the educational and regulatory disclaimer.
How we handle accuracy
- Our public guides summarise AMSA’s published information in our own words and link to AMSA as the primary source.
- Each guide states the date its AMSA facts were last checked. The current check date is 3 October 2026.
- Requirements change, so each guide tells you to confirm the current position with AMSA before you plan or book.
- Our own study suggestions are labelled as suggestions, separate from what AMSA publishes.
A related Navisailor Learning Centre resource
Navisailor Learning Centre also offers AMSA CoC oral exam coaching at amsacocprep.com, covering Officer of the Watch, Chief Mate and Master levels. That is a separate Navisailor Learning Centre service from AMSA Examiner, with its own arrangements.
